Bonjour tout le monde!!!
There exist a number of well-known public places in most cities (restaurant, church, hospital, museum, etc.) that most city-dwellers visit each day at any given moment.
This lesson will teach you the meanings of these public places in French, but most importantly, how to use them in combination with the FRENCH PREPOSITIONS OF LOCATION.
I. List of the most common prepositions of location in French:
| MOST COMMON PREPOSITIONS OF LOCATION IN FRENCH | ||
|---|---|---|
| à côté de (beside) | près de (near (to)) | loin de (far from) |
| sous (under) | sur (on, upon) | dans (in, inside) |
| en face de (opposite) | derrière (behind) | devant (in front of) |
| entre (between) | le coin (the corner) | au coin de la rue (in the street corner) |
NOTE: Because a preposition of location can oftentimes change based on the gender / number of the name of place that follows it, I will therefore divide this lesson into three sections. Section A follows right below [masculine nouns of public places]. For Sections B and C, click on the following links:
- SECTION B: PREPOSITIONS OF LOCATIONS WITH FEMININE NOUNS OF PUBLIC PLACES
- SECTION C: PREPOSITIONS OF LOCATIONS WITH NOUNS OF PUBLIC PLACES STARTING WITH A VOWEL OR SILENT H
Modifications to make to the prepositions of location based on the gender of the following noun (examples are provided later in each section):
| en face de (opposite) | à côté de (beside) | près de (near) | loin de (far from) | à (to/in/at) | de (from) | |
| Masculine | en face du + place | à côté du + place | près du + place | loin du + place | au + place | du + place |
| Feminine | en face de la + place | à côté de la + place | près de la + place | loin de la + place | à la + place | de la + place |
| Vowel/Silent h (masc. or fem.) |
en face de l’ + place | à côté de l’ + place | près de l’ + place | loin de l’ + place | à l’ + place | de l’ + place |

I guess I would like to know more about the structure of learning french, I love the lessons but don’t really know where I’m going and I’m afraid I’m not very good. No sure what I’m looking for but I seem tobe floundering.
Dear Herman,
Will there be any more additional lessons or is #24 the last one that you will post.
There should/will be
I\’m actively looking for some spare time to resume my activities here full speed again, but unfortunately time is a rare commodity at this moment. But yes, I will post more lesson, I just can\’t say when exactly. But thank you so much for your interest.
Herman
je suis heureuse aussi, merci beaucoup!
When you say Ils or Elles is it really excluded to boys and girls only? what if it is mixed? and what is the subject of a thing “it”?
Bonjour Jay. Use “Ils” for boys and “masculine” objects (yes, things do have gender in French). Use “elles” for girls and feminine objects. Use “ils” for mixed groups (boys and girls, even if there is just one masculine object/person against thousands of feminine objects/persons, “ILS” will be used). As for “it”, it depends on what you want to say. Check this out: English: “Inner beauty is necessary; it is really necessary” –> French: “La beauté intérieure est nécessaire. Elle est vraiment nécessaire” As you can see from this example, beauty (it) was translated into the subject pronoun “elle”. We will use “il” if masculine, or sometimes, we will use a neutral pronoun in the form of “ce/c’ “, “ceci” or “cela”, for example, “it is beautiful” will be “c’est beau”. I hope this helps. Merci!

Bonjour Islamgirl,
It would be too much of a hassle to write down all your answers for each exam here. That’s the reason I also provided the answer keys for every exam for more convenience, so you won’t have to copy/write and paste your answers. I hope this helps,
Herman

hi Herman,
You really have done a great job by uploading these tutorials. i am still in the process of going through your weekly lessons but every day i feel like becomming more at home with French language. i have tried to work on a few of your exercises but then i really feel the need of finding out how have i performed and for that purpose a key to your exercises seem a suitable solution. . . i would be further obliged if you can kindly afford some time to upload keys to your exercises as well.
Thanks.
Bonjour there! I will be more than happy to review your exercise for you. Just copy-paste it on the \”Exercises\” page, and I will let you know what I can do. Sometimes, too, other users have already posted their answers, which I have reviewed, and so you may check your own answers against them. But just feel free to paste your activities here and I will make sure to leave some comments.
p.s. uploading the keys to the exercises will definitely be much easier
I will think about posting them whenever time allows it. Merci!
Herman

Please tell me if it is right to put “à” before an infinitive. Like..
Il avail mal à faire ce travail….
Salut! Yes, you can put the preposition “à” before an infinitive. “Il avait du mal à manger” / “J’ai appris à chanter quand j’avais 10 ans.”
