Context:

Bonjour chers amis! Keep a calendar by your side because in this lesson, we are going to work with days and months. We are going to learn how to say the date in French. Do you want to learn how to read an important date on a calendar such as a birthday, a national celebration, etc? This lesson will help you do just that.

Goals:

In this lesson, you will learn the following:

→ the days of the week
→ the months of the year
→ how to say your birthday or any other date on the calendar

Don’t forget to complete this exercise when after studying the lesson below

Important: Needless to say that you will have to learn the numbers in French, at least up to number 31, if you want to be able to say what date it is. Here is a very good website where you can do so in a fun way: http://www.languageguide.org/im/num/fr/ Then come back here to continue.

Chapter 2 –> Lesson 2:

Level of difficulty: Easy

Quelle est la date aujourd’hui? What’s the date today?
Aujourd’hui, c’est jeudi. Today’s Thursday.
Aujourd’hui, c’est le 6 août. Today’s August 6th.

To practice more, you can alternate the days of the week (shown below) by using the same example above.

Part 1: Les jours de la semaine The days of the week

Lundi Monday
Mardi Tuesday
Mercredi Wednesday
Jeudi Thursday
Vendredi Friday
Samedi Saturday
Dimanche Sunday
Les lundis, je vais à l’université. I go to the University on Mondays

Qui est né un mardi? Who was born on Tuesday?

Ann, what do you do this Wednesday?

On Thursdays, I like taking a walk in the park.

Nous allons à une soirée ce vendredi. We are going to a (evening) party this Friday.

Tu vas aller au cinéma ce samedi? You’re going to the movies this Saturday?

His mother goes to church on Sundays.

Part 2: Les douze mois de l’année The 12 months of the year

Quelle est la date de ton anniversaire? (When is your birthday?)
C’est le premier mars. (It’s March 1st.)

When is Mary’s birthday?
C’est le 10 janvier. (It’s January 10th)

Quelle est la date de la Saint-Valentin? When is St Valentin’s day?
C’est le 14 février. (It’s February 14th)

Janvier January
Février February
Mars March
Avril April
Mai May
Juin June
Juillet July
Août August
Septembre September
Octobre Octobre
Novembre November
Décembre December

Important:

→ In French, when the date falls on the first (1st) of any month, i.e, March 1st, December 1st, etc, you should use  “le premier” to indicate “1st” . Example: C’est le premier avril. (It’s April 1st). You can use real cardinal numbers for all other dates. Example: C’est le deux (2) avril. (It’s April 2nd.)

→ Unlike in English, the first letter of a month is NOT capitalized in French in the middle of the sentence.

(When is your birthday?)et
When is Mary’s birthday?

    Merci beaucoup

Thanks for the lesson. Some are realy fast :-) For example “Je suis né le dix octobre, 1978.”, especially the year. Acording this can you tell me is this right
20 573- vingt mille cinq cents soixante- treize
95 743- quatre-vingt-quinze mille sept cents quarante- trois
I am testing myself? What about ” les tirets”? When are they necessary?
    Merci beaucoup. Tu es incroyable!:-)

You’re very welcome, Elka! And sorry if you find that I speak a little too fast in the audio recordings. Trust me, I really try very hard not to. I make sure to repeat a second time more slowly whenever the sentence is too long or might lead to confusion, but unfortunately, it sometimes comes out as if I was having a normal casual conversation with a French-speaking buddy :-) I’ll watch myself from now on…(if I can:-))

      1) 20573- vingt mille cinq cents soixante- treize –> Just remove the (s) at the end of “centS”. “Le tiret” is fine here.
      2) 95743- quatre-vingt-quinze mille sept cents quarante- trois –> This is OK, too. Only remove the (s) at the of (centS)and it will be perfect. ‘Les tirets” are fine here as well. Nice job.

I hope i didn’t sound bad i didn’t mean it.I respect your work a lot.I think is great to help the others. I started to study french a month ago and your videos and exercices make everything easier. I meaned that in principle the numbers are a litle bit dificult. And is good when you say it normal, bcause that is going to be if we have a real conversation in french.

Thanks for the quick answer. I am happy that after 2 days of studying the numbers finaly i am getting better :-)

  • Hi Prof Herman.
