      Bonjour Skigirl,

Thanks for submitting the answers of your exercise. You did very well overall.

Here is what I found for Ex. 1,

e- Elles ne parlent PAS bien anglais. (They don’t speak English well.)

      Est-ce que elles ne parlent PAS bien anglais? –> que+elles = qu\’elles

      For ex. 2:

b- Renée est une belle fille. (Renée is a beautiful girl.)

      Renée est-ELLE une belle fille?

      Again, great one! Merci! :-)

    Exercise Week 7 – Leçon 1

I had a question about this lesson. I noticed after looking at the exercise where there was no translation for Qui enseigne le Français? that on page 2 of this lesson it says “À qui est-ce que tu apprends le français?” (Who(m) are you teaching French?) Doesn’t apprends mean learn though? When I translated enseigne I got the word “sign,” but I see that it is also a verb that means teach. In the lesson before this one, I also got confused when I saw one of the answers for Week 6 Exam where legs was suppose to be “jambes,” but I think you had the french word for shoulders there. Just thought I’d mention. Also I think I saw “bleus” and “bleues” under the answers there if I remember right. One of the answers I think said “bleues,” but the plural is “bleus” right? Originally I thought I was wrong, and changed it to “bleues” like the answer said, but decided to go back to my answer “bleus.”

    Exercise:

    a) Qui mange le pain? (Who eats the bread) Qui est-ce qui mange le pain?

    b) Qui regarde la télé? (Who is watching TV?) Qui est-ce qui regarde la télé?

    c) Qui connaissent-elles? (Who do they know?) Qui est-ce qu’elles connaissent?

    d) À qui ressemble-t-il? (Who does he look like?) À qui est-ce qu’il est ressemble?

    e) Qui recompensons-nous? (Who do we reward?) Qui est-ce que nous recompensons?

    f) Qui parle espagnol dans cette classe? (Who speaks Spanish in this class?) Qui est-ce qui parle espagnol dans cette classe?

    g) Qui enseigne le Français? (Who teaches French?) Qui est-ce qui enseigne le Français?

    h) À qui pensent-elles? (Who are they thinking about?) À qui est-ce qu’elles pensent?

    i) De qui parlez-vous? (Who are you talking about?) De qui est-ce que vous parlez?

    Thanks :)

    • prof_frenchtastic

Salut Skigirl, Great answers!! Just review d) and make the necessary change:

      d) A qui est-ce qu’il ressemble?

Also, thanks for pointing out areas that seem a little confusing. I will take a closer look when times allows it make some modifications if needed. Merci beaucoup!

    • prof_frenchtastic

      Princess,

There are a few answers here to correct. For example, in C) (3rd answer), you wrote you chose “elle” for “demandent”. As I explain in my lesson, when a verb end in ENT, its subject is more likely ILS or ELLES (plural). Also when a verb ends in EZ, its subject is more likely to be VOUS. IL is written with only one L. Ths subject for VONT is ILS. Also, BOB et TOM = ILS (they) Hope this helps.

In Exercise 1, please verify answers: 1) and 5). In 1), the verb tense used in French does not match its English counterpart. In 5), the subject does not match the verb (or vice versa).

In exercise 2, everything is correct!!! Excellent travail!

      Herman

  • skigirl

    Merci :)

In exercise 1 I’m trying to ask using the informal you, “tu,” when do you have lunch? I know that “as” is paired with “tu” and I inverted the verb and subject there. Is that wrong? Number 5 should be: Quand est-ce que elles porteront des chemises bleus?

below is my submission for week 2 lesson 1
I used an online translater to get verbs
    probably appalling

    j’ai famme
    c’est terrifante
    il est assoifes
    je suis fatigue
    elle est mediocres
    il est en amoureux
    nous sommes froidons
    je suis stupide

    • prof_frenchtastic

      Bonjour Sheila,
Thank you for the effort. And also thanks for pointing out that you used an online translator. However, I will have to put on my French professor’s hat and write a few suggestions (and don’t take them personally, the sooner you deal with these problems, the better and easier it will be in the long run). So here I go:

I am afraid to say that almost all the answers are incorrect (and certainly the online translator is to blame for that)- If you want to achieve some serious progress in French (especially, with the conjugation), you should seriously consider consulting more authoritative bilingual dictionaries. Online translation will get you nowhere, especially in the beginning stages of your learning…you will end up learning ready-made, awkward translations and not being able to master the grammatical process underneath each sentence construction.

If online access is easier, check a site such as http://www.wordreference.com . They have a great French verb conjugator, which you can use, as well.

As far as the other exercises are concerned, I also notice that “agreement errors” were quite frequent. so here are a few things to keep in mind:

Subjects and Verbs should always agree. So for example, you wrote “est vous fache?” VOUS as a subject can only take ÊTES as a conjugated form of “être”. “EST” is reserved for the subjects IL/ELLE/ON. Also, accents are not optional in French, and so it should be “fâché(s)”.

Last, but not least, spelling errors could be avoided by consulting a great dictionary. I myself constantly use my big old Harrap’s Dictionary(French-English/English-French). Yes, it can be time consuming, but it’s worth the effort, and before you know, you will be spelling French words with almost no mistakes…This being said, let me know if you would like to re-post your revised answers after consulting a dictionary and taking into account what I have just said, or if you still would like me or someone else to review all your current exercises? I strongly suggest the former. But it’s all up to you.

      Merci.
      Herman

  • sheila

merci professeur, Yes I guess I have a long way to go. I really appreciate that you took the time to explain where I was going wrong. I have been trying different ‘D.I.Y’ ways to learn french and I feel I should start at the beginning again. Is there any particular way I should take the lessons..a structure to start at and work through, or should I just start chronologically with the utube downloads and open related links on website…I have the will to learn but I think I need help to structure my learning. Your web site was a real find as it seemed to be exactly what I was looking for, the fact that you contacted me personally with your corrections is a major bonus…a million thanks
    sheila

    • prof_frenchtastic

Bonjour Sheila, I’m glad these suggestions helped! yes, my lessons follow a certain order of learning (which you may have already figured out by now). I am providing an example to follow for the very first lesson.

      1. Go to the lesson page: http://frenchtasticpeople.com/youtube-downloads/french-lessons-youtube/ Once there, start from Week One (you will find 2 lessons in that category) Study the first lesson until you feel that you’re ready to try some exercises and test your comprehension.

      2. Go to the exercise page and get the exercise that corresponds to the first lesson of Week One: http://frenchtasticpeople.com/youtube-downloads/french-exercises-downloads/ (This exercise is labeled Exercise 1 – Week 1) When working on the exercise, never hesitate to return to the lesson if you want more clarity. Consider it an open-book test. You may also post your responses here for everybody to leave you some comments. Repeat this process (1 and 2) for the second lesson of Week One, and once you feel ready for the big test, you may now download the full exam, which covers both lessons of that same week one.

      3. Go to http://frenchtasticpeople.com/youtube-downloads/french-exams-downloads/ Try as much as you can to work without any help. This is your exam, and keep yourself in a testing mode. You only get at this level when you feel that the lesson make sense to you and the exercise was well understood.

4.Go to http://frenchtasticpeople.com/youtube-downloads/answer-keys-downloads/ to check your own answers and that’s it! Do the same for week 2 and 3 and on.

One thing to keep in mind: this is a self-paced language program, no stress, no rush, just a good deal of motivation and above all, much fun! understanding a lesson is obviously the most important step of all. So feel free to ask me questions here (in the lesson download page) if something seems unclear. I will be happy to help.
      Merci and have fun!

      Herman

Nice job, Sheila! Just a couple of typos:

      1. “Nous prendrons le petit-déjeuner ensemble.” (future tense) — Nous prenons (present tense)
      2. “Parles-tu français?” Français (i.e. the language) is always in the masculine form. But you could say “la langue française” — Also don’t forget to add a dash (-) between “PARLES” and “TU” in the interrogative form.

      Bon boulot!
      Herman
p.s. Nice to hear you found a way to place the accents!

In Week 1 – Ex B, make sure to write “français” for g) and h) As I said in a different post, French (as a language) is “(le) français” (masculine), not “française”. But if you really want to to use the feminine form, you could also say “la langue française” – I hope this helps!

Hi professor, should it then be “mon prof de français a de larges oreilles or a des larges oreilles (this is what I put)
    sheila

    • prof_frenchtastic

      Bonjour Sheila,

First, thank you for your recent donation!!! I really appreciate this kind gesture.
Although using “DES” here instead of “DE” does not constitute any “serious” offence against the French language :-) , I strongly suggest the use of “DE” in this particular situation. See, we have an adjective (larges) that precedes immediately the noun (oreilles). Usually in this case, French tends to elide “DES” into “DE”. For example, “Il y a DE belles maisons dans ce quartier” rather than “Il y a des DES belles maisons…” I want to stress the point that writing the latter will not necessarily make your sentence wrong, it is just the former phrasing is more commonly used, certainly due to the presence of the adjective that precedes the noun. If, however, there wasn’t any adjective, you’d be able to say: Il a DES oreilles.
      I hope this helps!

Herman, I’m sorry if in the last exercise I have grammar mistakes in english. I’m venezuelan, so I’m not perfect in writing :)

    • prof_frenchtastic

      Vanessa,
I’m sorry it seems like I missed to respond to this comment. Please, no need to apologize for the errors you’ve made since English is not your primary language, and even if it was, there would be absolutely no problem. It is already a good thing to be able to speak 2 or more languages as I do.
In Week 4 – Lesson 1–> Exercise 1, the answer 2 does not seem complete. There is a missing adjective. Could guess which one?
In that same exercise, in answer 4, you need to conjugate the verb “déjeuner”

In week 4 – Exercise 2, the 3rd answer (Mr. Hamagami…) also needs to be corrected (spelling of the verb and its tense).
The adjective “mauvaise” in “Tiger Woods…” does not not match the gender of the noun it modifies. And the last sentence of this exercise, I can see some Spanish crawling into the French (“razon”) :-)

In Week 5, Lesson 2 –> Exercise 2, please verify your responses for c) and d). In the last sentence, there is a small typo: you wrote “at” instead of “et” -

I think everything else looks good! Thanks for submitting your exercise. A plus!
