FRENCH SURVIVAL  – FRENCH VOCABULARY TESTING GUIDE

 186 cards | 16 sub-topics | all 4 skills tested

INTRODUCTION

This section covers the basic French phrases and vocabulary you must know to survive in France or some other French-speaking country you are visiting.

As we all know, France remains a popular travel destination for millions of tourists around the world. So every year, it’s around 87 millions visitors who make the journey to this Mediterranean country to enjoy its food, taste its wines and cheeses as well as experience its culture and beautiful.

However, without a basic knowledge of French (or at least its most common phrases), you will certainly experience a whole lot of problems and frustrations, which can and WILL make their journey quite painful (and a little embarrassing, to say the least).

This section is design to teach you the most basic French phrases and words in common social contexts (greetings, at the restaurant or hotel, etc.) I hope you find it useful.

1. bonjour

[sc_embed_player fileurl=”https://static-ftp.com/vocabulary-audio/french-survival/french-hello-good-morning.mp3″]

Good morning; Hello

Bonjour, monsieur./ Good morning, sir.

[sc_embed_player fileurl=”https://static-ftp.com/vocabulary-audio/french-survival/bonjour-monsieur.mp3″]

2. bonsoir

[sc_embed_player fileurl=”https://static-ftp.com/vocabulary-audio/french-survival/french-hello-good-evening.mp3″]

Good evening; Hello

Bonsoir, madame./ Good evening, madam.

[sc_embed_player fileurl=”https://static-ftp.com/vocabulary-audio/french-survival/bonsoir-madame.mp3″]

Tip: Any well-manner French speaker will advise you to add the titles “monsieur” or “madame” to your greeting whenever addressing somebody don’t know (well). Instead of just uttering a flat “bonjour”, you should say: “bonjour, monsieur” or “bonjour, madame“. If you can also determine that your female interlocutor is not yet married (she’s a teenager or in her early twenties, or doesn’t appear to have any wedding ring), then, “mademoiselle” must be used instead of “madame“. If you aren’t sure about the lady’s marital status, you can say (interrogatively) “madame, mademoiselle?” after your “bonjour/bonsoir”. This will be a cue for her to disclose the title/marital status she goes by.

3. salut!

Tip: Whenever you are unsure as to what form of address to use for your interlocutor (“tu” (informal) or “vous” (formal)), my best advice is that you use “vous” (or all other “formal” phrases shown here so far.) This way, you will avoid a common social/cultural “faux-pas” stalking so many French beginners.
