CHAPTER 23 – Definition – Interrogative – Interrogatif

L’interrogatif as we call it in French (interrogative in English) is about asking questions.

An interrogative sentence is one such “Reviendra-t-il demain?”  [Will he come back tomorrow?] that presents a question.

Questions typically end with a question mark [?] in French.

There are three main means of creating an interrogative sentence in French:

  1. You can invert the subject-verb order into verb-subject: “Manges-tu du pain?” Are you eating bread?
  2. You can use the phrase “Est-ce que…”: Est-ce que tu manges du pain? Are you eating bread?
  3. You can also use the intonation of your voice: Tu manges du pain? / Are you eating bread?
