CHAPTER 5 – Definition – Diaeresis – Tréma

The French tréma accent [l’accent tréma] (the diaeresis) is represented by two dots placed the letters e [ ë ] or i [ ï ] or [ ü ].

The presence of the tréma is to indicate that the vowel affected by it must be pronounced separately: ambigüité (ambiguity), Noël (Christmas), maï(corn).
