What's an *article*?

An article in French grammar refers to words such as le, la, un, or des, etcIt always precedes a noun and offers information about it, including among other things

  • whether this noun is masculine or feminine (gender)
  • whether it is plural or singular (number)
  • specific or non-specific
  • a part or a whole of a category (partitive) and so on.

Articles are part of the Determiners grammatical category.

There are three main types of articles:

  1. Definite --> le / la / les / l' [the]
  2. Indefinite --> un / une / des [a(n)/some]
  3. Partitives --> du / de la / de l' [some/any]
