What's the *grave accent*?

In the French language, the grave accent [accent grave] (`)is placed above the letter [a] (« à »), [e] (« è »),  and  (« ù »).

When the accent grave is placed over a the letter [e], it usually indicates the lengthening of this [è] as in "Je me lève" (I get up).

In the case of [a] and the accent is usually placed to differentiate between words, for example, à (to) vs (has) or où (where) vs ou (or).
