What's *mute*?
A mute syllable or letter (une syllabe muette / une lettre muette), is one which is not sounded.
In un homme [man], the letter [h] is mute/silent.
In malade [sick], the last syllable de is mute--> (Therefore, we end up with two syllables, ma-lade.

Below, I present a couple of mute letters or syllables in the French language:
- "superbe" superb [2 syllables -->su.perbe] The final e is mute, making the syllable be mute as well.
- un hôtel" hotel --> The letter [h] is mute, making a liaison possible between the n of un and the o of hotel.
- un hommage" homage--> The letter [h] is mute, making a liaison possible between the n of un and the o of hommage.
