What's an *cardinal* number?

A cardinal number is, well, a number used in counting such as un, deux, trois, etc.

In French, the different dates in a month all use cardinal numbers (le deux (2nd), le trois (3rd)) -- with the exception of the first day (le premier), which uses an ordinal number.
