What's a *part of speech*?
Called une catégorie grammaticale in French, a part of speech is nothing but a linguistic designation for groups such as nouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions and so on.
Every word making up the French language is assigned a part of speech based on the syntactic function it plays. In other words, a part of speech makes it easy to know the role of every word in a sentence.
There are eight or nine parts of speech depending on whether you include differentiate between qualifying adjectives and determiners (articles).
