Prefix – préfixe
Let's Define It!
What's a *prefix*?
A prefix (un préfixe in French) is a linguistic particle that you add to the beginning of a word to create a new grammatical function or create a new meaning.
For example, in découragement (discouragement), the prefix is dé, the root is courage and the suffix is ment.
Prefixes can be added before the stems of a noun (immobilisation), verb (immobiliser), adjective (immobile) and adverb (irrégulièrement) .
