Third group – troisième groupe
Let's Define It!
What's the *third group*?
Le troisième groupe as it's called in French contains the most complex and the most difficult verb conjugations in the French language. The main reason for this is that verbs belonging to that group are irregular (i.e. irregular stems and/or endings)
The third group is considered extinct. Newly-coined French verbs are now listed under the 1st group (-er verbs) or 2nd group (-ir-verbs).
There are a little over 350 French verbs in the third group.
Le troisième group comprises
- the verb aller
- verbs ending in -ir whose present participle ends in -ant (not -issant)
- all verbs ending in -oir
- all verbs ending in -re
